The UK’s athletics capital in 2025

In 2025, Birmingham will host the UK’s two biggest athletics events of the year: the UK Athletics Indoor Championships at Utilita Arena from 22-23 February 2025 and the UK Athletics Outdoor Championships at Alexander Stadium from 2-3 August 2025.

For athletics, the Alexander Stadium in Perry Barr is a crown jewel. Refurbished extensively for the 2022 Commonwealth Games, the venue is now one of the UK’s premier facilities for track and field events.

The stadium’s expanded capacity of 18,000 – temporarily increased to 30,000 for the Commonwealth Games – and modern amenities make it a favourite for both athletes and spectators. It hosts national championships and regional athletics meets, fostering talent at all levels.

Football: the city’s lifeblood

Birmingham is home to two historic football clubs: Aston Villa and Birmingham City.

Aston Villa, one of England’s oldest and most successful clubs, were founded in 1874. The English Premier League club’s home ground, Villa Park, is a legendary stadium located between the two inner-city suburbs of Aston and Witton. With a seating capacity of more than 42,000, the stadium has hosted numerous memorable matches, including international fixtures. Aston Villa’s storied history includes multiple FA Cups and a European Cup victory in 1982. In the 2024-2025 football season, Villa qualified for the Uefa Champions League, welcoming some of Europe’s biggest clubs back to the B6 postcode.

Birmingham City FC, affectionately known as “Blues”, are an EFL League One club who play at St. Andrew’s Stadium, which has a capacity of 29,000. Founded in 1875, Birmingham City have enjoyed various highs, including League Cup success most recently in 2011.

The rivalry between these two clubs culminates in the fiercely contested “Second City Derby”, a highlight of the English football calendar.

Edgbaston: a cricketing cathedral

Birmingham’s cricketing legacy centres around Edgbaston Cricket Ground, one of the most renowned venues in the sport. Home to Warwickshire County Cricket Club and a regular host of international matches, Edgbaston has seen many iconic moments, from Ashes Test battles between England and Australia to thrilling Twenty20 contests.

The stadium is famous for its lively atmosphere, particularly during England’s home games. With a capacity of 25,000, it is one of the largest cricket ground outside London. Recent renovations have enhanced its facilities, including a state-of-the-art pavilion, making it a favourite for players and fans alike.

Visitors can explore the venue through guided tours that delve into cricket’s history and the evolution of Edgbaston. For those lucky enough to attend a match, the Hollies Stand is the place to be, renowned for its carnival-like spirit.
