2020: a huge year for football in Argentina’s capital Buenos Aires

With Copa America fixtures at River Plate’s stadium and two major milestones for Boca Juniors on the calendar, 2020 promises to be a huge year for football fans in Argentina’s capital city Buenos Aires.

Argentina and Colombia co-host the 47th edition of the Copa America, the equivalent of Europe’s Uefa European Championship, and Buenos Aires will be the location for four matches.

On 12 June the iconic El Monumental stadium in Buenos Aires, home of River Plate, will host the opening match of the tournament between Argentina and Chile in group A.

As well as the opening match, the 70,000-capacity El Monumental will also host Argentina’s group A fixtures against Paraguay and Australia and a quarter-final on 5 July.

Players such as Barcelona’s Lionel Messi, Manchester City’s Sergio Aguero and Juventus’s Paulo Dybala will be expected to be in Argentina’s squad as they look to win the Copa for a 15th time and first since 1993.

Major milestones for Boca Juniors

This year also marks 115 years since the founding of Boca Juniors – one of Argentina’s biggest football clubs and River Plate’s fiercest rivals.

The anniversary of the Boca Juniors’s founding is coupled with another major celebration for the club as 2020 is the 80th year since the construction of their home stadium La Bombonera.

Formerly known as Estadio Alberto J. Armando, La Bombonera (The Chocolate Box) opened its door in 1940 and was soon given its nickname thanks to its peculiar shape with one flat stand and three steep, more rounded stands.

La Bombonera is known for its excellent acoustics which has given Boca’s supporters the nickname of “La Doce” (The 12th Man) and ensured its status as one of the most emblematic football stadiums in the world.
