Ski mountaineering proposed for Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics

The Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games organising committee has officially proposed the inclusion of ski mountaineering to the event’s programme.  In a statement, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said ski mountaineering will be put forward as an additional sport for 2026 and the IOC Executive Board has forwarded this proposal to the next IOC Session in Tokyo in July. 2021 Florida Cup: Arsenal, Inter, Everton and Millonarios FC to play in July tournament

English Premier League clubs Arsenal and Everton will take their pre-season preparations Stateside by competing in the 2021 Florida Cup. Taking place on 25 July and 28 July at the Camping World Stadium in Orlando, the tournament will see the English sides joined by Italy’s Inter Milan and Colombia’s Millonarios FC.  The first night of action on Sunday 25 July will see reigning Serie A champions Inter take on Arsenal and in the other match Everton face Millonarios FC in the semi-finals. 10,000 fans allowed at each Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games venue

The spectator numbers for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games have been announced. Each venue will have a 50% capacity limit, up to a maximum of 10,000 people.  In March it was confirmed that overseas spectators would not be able to enter Japan for the Olympic Games or Paralympic Games due to Covid-19 restrictions. Only Japanese residents will be allowed to attend the summer games. British & Irish Lions: fixtures and venues confirmed for tour of South Africa

The schedule has been confirmed for the British & Irish Lions’s tour of South Africa this summer. Warren Gatland’s side will play five warm-up matches before taking on the Springboks in three Tests.  All eight games will be played in Gauteng or Cape Town, the Lions said. This is to “minimise the risks of disruption that could be caused by the Covid-19 pandemic” and the schedule “accommodates stable team bases and training venues and significantly reduces travel”. Barbarians to face Samoa in the Killik Cup at Twickenham

2021 French Open tennis grand slam in Paris now set to start on 24 May

The start of the 2021 French Open tennis grand slam has been postponed by a week due to the Covid-19 situation in France. Now set to take place from 24 May to 13 June, the decision to delay the clay court major at Roland-Garros has been made in order to accommodate more fans. After being postponed in May last year, it has now been confirmed that the World Sports Tourism Congress is rescheduled for 25-26 November 2021. Organised by the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the Catalan Tourist Board (Agència Catalana de Turisme), the event will be held in Lloret de Mar, Catalonia, Spain. After months of speculation the British & Irish Lions rugby union team have confirmed they intend to tour South Africa as planned this summer.  There had been reports that the series could be moved to the UK or even played in Australia. Greece will return to the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) for the first time in eight years after the fabled Acropolis Rally Greece was added to the 2021 calendar. TOCA, organiser of the Kwik Fit British Touring Car Championship, has confirmed minor revisions to the previously issued 2021 BTCC calendar as a result of the government recently issuing its roadmap for the easing of restrictions. While the opening race weekend – at Thruxton on 8/9 May – remains unchanged and will unfortunately take place behind closed doors, amendments have been made to the scheduling of the next two events in order to further maximise the opportunity for spectators to attend. Women’s Rugby World Cup set to be postponed until 2022

World Rugby has recommended the postponement of the 2021 Rugby World Cup until next year due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.  The women’s international rugby union event was due to take place in New Zealand in September and October.
