Video: new format and finals for Fed Cup women’s tennis event

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has announced that the women’s tennis Fed Cup tournament will be relaunched with a new format and new finals event. A “World Cup of Tennis” format will see the number of nations increase from eight to 20 and they will compete each year to be world champions.  According to the official news release 16 nations will compete in the 2020 qualifiers on 7-8 February on a home-and-away basis over five matches to earn one of eight places in the finals.  The eight qualifying nations will join the 2019 finalists Australia and France, host nation Hungary and one wild card in the 2020 Fed Cup by BNP Paribas Finals - a new event that will be held from 14-19 April 2020 in Budapest, Hungary. England’s Barmy Army announce 2019 New Zealand cricket tour details

England’s cricket team will play two Test matches in New Zealand this winter and the famous Barmy Army will once again be supporting from the stands.  The Barmy Army, England’s loyal fan base, has announced details of its travel packages to New Zealand for the tour in November and December 2019.  According to BarmyTravel.com the New Zealand tour Tests package starts from £3,399 per person and includes 16 nights’ accommodation and return international flights. Schumacher’s Ferrari F2002 car is up for auction at F1 Abu Dhabi GP

Formula 1 fans attending the season-ending Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will get the chance to bid for Michael Schumacher’s 2002 title-winning Ferrari F2002 when it goes up for auction.  Potential buyers must have deep pockets though as the Ferrari F2002 is estimated to be sold for between US$5.5m and US$7.5m. The car, chassis no.219, is the headline lot for the Abu Dhabi GP auction which is hosted by RM Sotheby’s in partnership with Formula 1.  Also going under the hammer is a restored 1990 Ferrari F40 signed by four-time F1 world champion Sebastian Vettel. The F40 has an estimate of between US$1.5m and US$1.75m. Milan-Cortina awarded 2026 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games

Milan-Cortina has been selected to host the 2026 Winter Olympic Games and Paralympic Winter Games. The Italian destination was confirmed for 2026 ahead of the other candidate bid from Stockholm-Åre in Sweden. The decision was taken during the 134th session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Lausanne, Switzerland on 24 June. IOC president Thomas Bach said: “Congratulations to Milan-Cortina. Women’s T20 cricket proposed for Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games

The Commonwealth Games Federation’s executive board has approved proposals for three new sports to be included at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England. Beach volleyball, Para table tennis and women’s Twenty20 cricket have been recommended for inclusion in the 2022 programme. The plans will now be put to a final vote of the CGF’s general assembly, which is made up of the 71 member Commonwealth Games Associations. Birmingham’s Edgbaston Stadium, where all of the women’s cricket matches would be played, is currently hosting matches at the ICC Cricket World Cup and will also host the opening Test match of the Ashes series between England and Australia. Premier League creates a buzz for international visitors to Britain

New research from VisitBritain shows the power of the Premier League in driving inbound tourism amongst overseas football fans, with more than three-quarters of those surveyed intending to visit the UK during the next two years. Chinese football fans surveyed showed the greatest intention with 92% intending to visit the UK within the next two years followed by India, 85% and the US, 80%. VisitBritain’s International Football Research also found that the Premier League had a greater pull for tourists than the top leagues in other countries. Two-thirds, 66%, of those who had travelled to watch a football match in the UK saw a Premier League match, making it the most popular. According to Visit London 2018 saw a record 2.6m visits to London from the US, with live sports events playing a key role in attracting tourists.
