Sports travel bucket list: Moncayo’s new exclusive golf club in Puerto Rico

Exclusive experiences are an obvious addition to any bucket list, especially for sports travel, and the upcoming golf offering at Moncayo in Puerto Rico may just be the most exclusive we’ve seen yet. Moncayo, a luxury private residential community on Puerto Rico’s eastern seacoast, has unveiled details of its new golf club designed in collaboration with UK-based golf course architecture firm, Mackenzie & Ebert.

Moncayo’s golf club is so exclusive that it will be limited to just 400 memberships, which are reserved for resident members and their guests. The club will feature an 18-hole championship course, spanning more than 7,200 yards with six sets of tees to accommodate golfers of all levels of play, and boast several holes offering stunning views of the Caribbean Sea. Additionally, a one-acre putting course, “El Yunquito”, will provide a fun, social space for both practice and relaxed entertainment.

As well as the 18-hole course, Moncayo’s golf offering will feature a nine-hole short “family course”, designed as a fun alternative for short-game practice. This course offers a dynamic layout that appeals to families, seasoned golfers and those looking for a quicker round. Within the golf house on the practice facility is the golf performance centre, designed to elevate the game with dedicated instruction and innovative technologies and techniques.

Construction of the course is already underway, with shaping completed on the first four holes and progress continuing on practice grounds.

Moncayo Golf Club in Puerto Rico is designed by UK-based golf course architecture firm, Mackenzie & Ebert

“Designing our first course in the Caribbean has been an exciting challenge, one that allows us to blend renowned design with the natural beauty of Puerto Rico and the wonderful land at Moncayo as we grow our international footprint,” said Martin Ebert, co-founder of Mackenzie & Ebert. “Our design seeks to respect and enhance the island’s natural landscape with a layout that challenges golfers while offering truly breathtaking 360-degree views of the ocean and mountains for a unique sense of its location. The test with golf is always whether people will remember each individual hole at the end of the round, and I think there will be no problem at all at Moncayo.”

With 1,100 acres of expansive natural beauty, three miles of shoreline and a private island beach, Moncayo offers a range of water sports and activities as part of the Moncayo Ocean Club. Residents can gain access to an exclusive member’s clubhouse and athletic club with stadium courts for tennis, pickleball, and padel. In addition to the private club amenities, the community will have full access to an Auberge Resorts Collection HoteI, extensive dining options, a curated and inspired spa and wellness programme, and branded resort villas and private residences.
