Ski instructor marketplace Maison Sport expands to Scotland

Maison Sport, a platform created to connect people with the best independent ski and snowboard instructors, will expand into all major winter sports resorts in Scotland, including Cairngorm Mountain, Glencoe Mountain, Glenshee, Lowther Hills, Nevis Range and The Lecht. Building on success in France, Italy and Switzerland, the expansion will support instructors whose qualifications are recognised across Europe, but will now be unable to work in Europe this winter unless they find a way to obtain a work visa. Ski mountaineering proposed for Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics

The Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games organising committee has officially proposed the inclusion of ski mountaineering to the event’s programme.  In a statement, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said ski mountaineering will be put forward as an additional sport for 2026 and the IOC Executive Board has forwarded this proposal to the next IOC Session in Tokyo in July. The proposal to include ski mountaineering consists of: 5 new medal events: 2 men’s events (Sprint/Individual), 2 women’s events (Sprint/Individual), 1 mixed-gender relay event48 athlete quotas (24 men/24women) to be found within the overall framework of the 2,900 quota These five proposed events will follow the principles set for all other events in the programme, including the implementation of a ...

Study reveals impact of Covid-19 on the UK snow sports and ski industry

A survey of UK snow sports and ski industry professionals has revealed the damage that the Covid-19 pandemic has had on their businesses. Published by Ski Press and Skipedia, the research was conducted online from 24-29 April 2020 and sectors represented include tour operators, travel agencies, retail, brands, ski slopes and media. As well as the impact of the coronavirus measures, the study looked at what the future might hold for the winter sports industry during the next 12 months.  Some of the key findings were:  82% of companies suffered reduced sales due to the premature end of the 2019-20 season, with two-thirds experiencing lower than usual sales for winter 2020-21 so far Almost one in five have made staff redundant and a quarter are concerned they could go out of business...

China’s winter sports industry boosted by Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics

The Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games is having an immediate effect on China’s winter sports industry.  An International Olympic Committee (IOC) Coordination Commission meeting in July was told how there are plans to get 300 million Chinese people involved in winter sports. There has also been an increase in events and facilities.  According to information published by the IOC, by the end of 2018 there were 742 ski resorts and 596 ice rinks throughout the country, with more facilities being built every year.  During the 2018-2019 snow sports season, there were 4,401 district level, municipal and national level winter sports events in China, with 8.15 million people taking part.  The Beijing 2022 Organising Committee said there has been an overall growth of the winter spo...

Milan-Cortina awarded 2026 Winter Olympic and Paralympic Games

Milan-Cortina has been selected to host the 2026 Winter Olympic Games and Paralympic Winter Games. The Italian destination was confirmed for 2026 ahead of the other candidate bid from Stockholm-Åre in Sweden. The decision was taken during the 134th session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in Lausanne, Switzerland on 24 June. IOC president Thomas Bach said: “Congratulations to Milan-Cortina.
